The obligatory oct.uplet post

Ok all you non fertility impaired people I want to share some news with you. It may be something you did not know but I am just going to put this out there so I only have to say it one more time and I know many people who do not go through this every day really have no idea about what happens during fertility treatments except the junk (mostly) portrayed in the media.

I will not have 8 babies at once just because I am going through fertility treatments. So the statement "haha that is going to be you" is totally false! How do I know this you may ask? Because I go to a RESPONSIBLE RE. My RE would NEVER allow this to happen. See if you are going to a RESPONSIBLE RE he/she would either a) cancel the cycle b) if it is for IVF, not transfer that many embryos. First of all this lady did use fertility treatment I am 99.999999999999% positive of that. If she conceived them naturally then she needs to be studied some how some way because she is an anomaly. Also, oct.uplet lady either had a bad RE or she was not following the doctors advice such as going home and doing the deed after finding out said cycle was canceled or better yet she is not even seeing a doctor and got the meds herself and shot herself up un-monitored. If you need any more evidence then take a look at the latest news which states she is a single mom and may already have six children. What dr would do that? I am not saying someone can't have 14 children if they choose but having 8 at once can cause ENORMOUS complications and cost ENORMOUS amounts of money.
If there is a dr that did this then I think he/she needs to have their license taken away. This is a rare occurrence hence the reason it is such big news. This is also one of the reasons IVF has a stigma attached to it and it is unfortunate and should not be this way.

If you would like more information check out this article posted by Shelby over at The Great Big IF.

Ok there...I got that off my chest, now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

O.M.G! Dude! ::stomps feet on ground while she waves hands madly::

I have had entirely too many discussions on this to even say anything else. I'm nearly wordless. I only have grunts left.

Only thing I want to say is..DITTO!!

I know very little about IVF, although I do know that I've had this same fight with people who know NOTHING about IVF and think it's the most common thing in the world among the IVF patients.

I've tried to avoid the story for many reasons, but I'm so sick of people that know nothing spew crap about how if you go through IVF, you'll have umpteen babies.

Well said! I can't even post about this on my blog because I totally go off on this subject.

Unacceptable. Unsafe. Unhealthy.

I actually heard it was IVF. At first I thought that was a reporter error, because that's a common mistake in the media (IUI vs IVF), but someone else told me it really was IVF. They transferred that many embryos.

*sigh*

There is no way that she had IVF. No doctor would put in that many embies. And I heard today that it is against the law to put in more than 5. She is full of crap trying to draw attention to herself probably to make some $$ for her story.

I just read this story today. It made me very angry. First of all...women like this give infertility treatments a bad name. Women like this are the reason why most insurance does not cover infertility treatments. I am so mad. This is why there is a stigma. arrggghhhh...

It's too bad that most good IF role models are unseen and that somehow exceptions like this become our spokespeople. It just perpetuates more of the crazy myths we have to live with.

That's just crazy! I can't even imagine that many babies at once!

Oooh, I hadn't thought of that. The whole maybe she got her hands on the meds (not difficult to do really) and did an unmonitored cycle on her own. I did also here something where someone referred to embryos which was to at least lead you to think that it was IVF. Yes, totally irresponsible no matter who you are. I've already heard the negative comments at work about how we the tax payers are paying for those babies, should be laws against that, yada yada yada.

I totally agree with you - the article I read said her mother reported she had "in vitro" but I refuse to believe that is possible. Surely no RE in their ever loving mind would transfer EIGHT!!!!

Being that she has six kids already, she is clearly fertile. I can't help but wonder if she got some meds off the internet and didn't know how to use them. I also read she didn't seek prenatal care until she was 12 weeks?!?!

I can understand the debate about the doctor providing fertility treatments to a mother of six - who is he to decide how many kids is too many, blah, blah, blah. But this woman is clearly an idiot.

I read that she had a sperm donor. I also agree that it couldn't have been IVF, but that if it was IUI and the ovaries were over stimulated then they wouldn't have proceded with IUI, but say there were a smaller handful of eggs and they did the IUI and then some of those naturally split to make identical twins or triplets. It could happen even though it's crazy long odds. But yeah, it is ridiculous that she already had 6 kids. I mean come on, I can see if you have 1 or 2 and wanting more, but 6 and wanting more??? I think that's just greedy!
